The CW Network has made history in the coronavirus era as it became the first network to set a “back to business” date post COVID-19 production shutdown on Thursday.

Instead of the annual CW Upfront, the New York based presentation where the network unveils their upcoming content for the respective television season, the network announced that it will premire its 2020–21 line up in January.

The CW January Premiere Line Up

Rather than seeing the Flash and the other hereos speed through your television in October, as they have done in past seasons, you’ll first being able to view a line up of acquired scripted series and programming. In addition to that, the final 7 episodes of the long-running series, Supernatural will premiere as well.

“The CW will start its new season in January 2021 when we launch our regular primetime schedule,” said Mark Pedowitz, current president of The CW.

With the start times of the CW seasons later than usual, there is no need for concern over the size orders. The series that are scheduled to air are still producing seasons of length in line of what the network typically do. Meaning the 2020–2021 season will deliver seasons of 13–22 episodes, depending on the show. the late start will stretch the season to July-August, (with a May “midseason”). That means the stars may have short summer break before the start of the 2021–2022 season starts in October as usual.

According to Deadline, Pedowitz stated that the final episodes that could not be filmed by because of COVID-19 will be included in the next season of the show. A clear example would be the final 3 episodes of The Flash (S6x20, S6x21, and S6x22) will now be the first 3 episodes of Season 7.

“The final episodes from some CW shows’ current seasons, which could not be filmed because of the pandemic, will be shot and included in their next seasons”

Raising Questions about the network’s annual Arrow-verse crossover loomed over the course of the last few days.

The network is also planning a smaller version of its traditional Arrowverse crossover to air in late Q1-early Q2 2021.” said Pedowitz

Pedowitz has also gone on record stating that the network is continuing to create their contingency plan in case the Coronavirus pandemic further interrupts their (Hollywood) production plans to resume by fall. The CW is continuing to look at other acquisitions of scripted series, while also in discussions on a series of different projects.

“That is all if there is not further major production disruption from the coronavirus pandemic this fall or next year.” said Pedowitz.
